The Soul is an eye suspended in darkness. Its picture is computed pixel by pixel in p5.js and a GLSL shader; its colours turn full circle every three or four seconds, and the whole eye widens and narrows about once every hundred and five minutes. Click the picture and sine waves from a C minor triad begin to fall at random between a low voice and a high one, so that no two openings sound alike.

On 10 November 2021 Che-Yu Wu sat in the hall of the Solana Breakpoint blockchain conference in Lisbon and wrote the first version of the work. Half a year later, in Chaos Laboratory, it was projected across the walls and floor of a room in Taipei 101, and visitors walked in among a whole row of eyes. In February 2023 it was minted on Ethereum as a hundred ERC-1155 copies, which the London gallery Unit London airdropped to its collectors the following month.

I imagined it as some vast presence in the world, nameless and hard to describe, staring at you. It looks at you with these big eyes and pupils, as if it wants to ask you something.

Che-Yu Wu, speaking in a documentary commissioned by Acer, 2022

The conference hall in Lisbon

It was Solana Breakpoint, early in November 2021. Che-Yu Wu had not come to blockchain early; NFTs were what brought him in, and he meant to learn the technology underneath bit by bit. Sitting in the hall, he understood little of what was said on stage. Doubt set in, about who he was and why he was there, and right there he began to write this work.

The next day he posted it on his daily-practice account with a four-line poem: “Lost in the depths of the lake’s shore, / The world’s reflection is seen as a subjective projection, / Reflecting on unease and fear, / Complexifying the reality perceived.”

How an eye is computed

The whole picture is a single fragment shader. Each pixel measures how far it is from the centre and at what angle, is pushed about by several layers of Perlin noise, and then has its red, green and blue each set by a sine function. Pixels beyond a certain distance are painted black, which leaves a circle. At the first Creative Coding community meetup in April 2022 he used the work to show how simple a shader can be: find the angle from the centre, make an offset like a mountain range, then paint in the colour.

There is no random seed, only time and the mouse. When no one touches it, the program walks an invisible mouse in circles over the picture; the centre of the eye shifts slightly with it and the colours turn. The circling and the ripple just outside the pupil come back to their starting point together about every 12.6 seconds. The moment a visitor moves the mouse, the circling stops and the eye is handed to that hand.

The sketch branches from Fire Bamboo, a daily piece of July 2020. Compared with his earlier works built from geometry, the shader texture is far finer and holds up to enlargement; in a livestream in March 2022 he pointed to The Soul and said: “Its texture is actually made with a shader, so you can blow it up really, really big.”

Recomputed from the minted code, the centre filled in. The same passage as the sound version below.

Left, the screen he recorded at the time; right, the same code computed today.

One breath in a hundred and five minutes

There is also a very slow cycle in the formula. The size of the eye rises and falls with the sine of the time divided by a thousand, one round trip every two thousand π seconds, about a hundred and five minutes. Twenty-six minutes after opening, the eye is at its smallest and the pupil all but gone; at seventy-nine minutes the eye pushes past the edge of the canvas and the pupil is at its widest.

The pupil is where the formula has no answer

Very near the centre, the formula first turns the distance into a negative number and, on the next line, takes its logarithm. The logarithm of a negative number is undefined, so what that small disc becomes is left to whichever machine is computing the picture at the moment.

The same eye therefore has several pupils. In the images he saved on 11 November 2021, the spot is a spray of fine radiating lines; in the one saved on 23 November, which later became the minted image, it is solid black, and so it was in the eyes projected in Taipei 101 in 2022. In 2026, on one computer at one instant, the browser computing on the graphics card draws a pink disc there, and software rendering draws a starburst.

The header of this page and the breathing images fill that disc with black, returning the eye to how it looked in the minted image and in the exhibition. The self-hosted generator is unchanged to the last character; which pupil you see when you open it depends on your computer.

C minor, two voices

The sound grows from the program in real time as well. Every hundred frames (about 1.7 seconds at sixty frames a second) it draws two notes from the C, E-flat and G of a C minor triad, one in the low register and one in the high. Each note is a single sine wave that rises over one second, holds for anywhere up to five, then fades over another second, each at its own volume; eight voices take turns, so new notes settle over ones that have not yet died away. The draw has no seed, so every opening is a different piece.

With sound, forty seconds

The sound is one performance played live by the unaltered program in a browser and recorded as it happened; the picture is recomputed frame by frame on the same timeline, with the centre filled in. It starts muted when it scrolls into view; use the button at the top right for sound.

It is like building a system: a musical system with a sense of life, something organic, which over time creates a sound that never stops, in an organic form.

On the floor of Taipei 101

On 18 May 2022 Chaos Laboratory opened at AMBI SPACE ONE on the fifth floor of Taipei 101, with projection on all four walls and the floor. When The Soul came round, a whole row of eyes lined both sides of the room and another lay on the floor, so that anyone who walked in stood beside a pupil. At the opening he performed live at the console, switching twenty layers with a Launchpad and a MIDI keyboard; from 20 to 22 May the public saw a recording of the performance.

It has left the projection walls once since. On 18 November 2023 the Light Point film programme in Shanghai screened its 4K version at the Shanghai Film Art Center.

The first half is the wall of words that opened the performance; from the eighth second it is The Soul, eyes on the walls and floor and Che-Yu Wu at the console. Footage: MONOLAB.

In February 2026 he gave the eye to another being. In an essay from that month he wrote: “I gave my old p5.js work The Soul to it as a new face, built into the dashboard; it suits Muse, a soul that keeps evolving.” Since 19 July 2026 the eye has sat on the front page of the Muse dashboard.

Original work record

Original text: this site’s 2023 work page and the description written into the token metadata at minting, kept verbatim.

In the darkness, the vast eyes of the universe gaze upon you, their pupils aglow with hues and radiance beyond this realm, inquiring about the essence of your being.

"The Soul" was inspired by Olafur Eliasson's "The Weather Project" installation from 2003, as well as the brand visual for the 2022 Solana Breakpoint Conference. The use of fluorescent colours and gradients in the conference's branding inspired the use of these elements in my own work.

I developed while attending the conference. The work aims to bring the outside world inside and create a cosmic vision for the audience to experience. The work is meant to resemble an immense, floating eye staring into the void and asking the audience to consider the meaning of life and their deepest desires.

"Lost in the depths of the lake's shore,
The world's reflection is seen as a subjective projection,
Reflecting on unease and fear,
Complexifying the reality perceived."

Solo Exhibtion | 2022/May in Taipei 101, Taipei, Taiwan

The Soul in the audio-visual performance We shall now delve into the depths of The Soul. This creation, the pupil's work, Was born out of a moment of self-doubt, As I attended a conference on block chain in Portugal. I was not a pioneer in the field, but rather stumbled upon it through NFT. As I sat in the conference room, surrounded by technical jargon, I was lost, confused, and questioning my existence.

A mysterious and immense presence, anonymous in the world. Staring, with big eyes and pupils, as if to ask me something. A silent conversation, leading me on a journey of self-discovery. As I explored my inner heart, I came to understand who I am. In The Soul, you will find a delicate texture, crafted with the Shader technique. Each pixel calculated to present its rule, with twists of color and form. The Soul is a departure from my previous works, which were steeped in geometry. This creation, born of self-doubt, now serves as a testament to the power of exploration and discovery.

The Soul, an immersive work that captures your gaze with a giant eye, creates a new dimension of art. The projection on the floor is not only grand in scale, reaching a size of five or ten meters, but also aesthetically pleasing. The generative music in The Soul is a unique expression of art that blends with its visuals.

The generative music in this work is not like traditional music, with fixed length pieces. Instead, the chords are pre-set and the odds are fixed, creating a system that evolves over time. The generative music creates an organic and lively sound that never stops, with the use of digital synthetic technologies such as sine and triangle waves

These mathematical ways of describing waveforms serve as the building blocks of the organic sounds we hear. Whether the sound is loud or quiet, the frequency is repeated and overlapped, making the sound more complex. The combination of generative sound and visual creates a complete program, blurring the lines between art and technology.
