Che-Yu Wu opened his first online course on Hahow in 2016. Ten years and four courses later, 23,134 students have taken them. He scrapped the first course halfway through recording and started again, spent a full year recording the second, collected 237 survey responses and ran a five-week trial with 28 students before recording the third, and since September 2026 has taught the fourth, New Media Art Panorama, live every Tuesday evening. The courses are taught in Mandarin Chinese.

New Media Art Panorama

Make 8 works in 11 weeks and build your own creative flow

Panorama is Che-Yu Wu’s fourth course on Hahow and his first taught live. From 22 September to 22 December 2026, eleven lessons stream on YouTube every Tuesday evening, while students hand in work and ask questions on Discord. It starts with the first line of p5.js and moves through vectors and particles, algorithms of nature, sound and image, then TouchDesigner, body tracking and audiovisual performance. The last lesson is about carrying a creative practice forward with AI.

In class he takes apart his own works: SoulFish, The Great Equation, The Boundary of Dreams and Solitude, The Eternal Garden in a Bottle.

Che-Yu Wu's third course went live the year he graduated from NYU. It teaches with p5.js and OpenProcessing, so everything is written in the browser with nothing to install, moving from lines, colour and loops to vectors, noise, particles and 3D. Before recording, he sent out a survey and got 237 responses back, then asked 28 students to trial the course one unit a week for five weeks. He was in New York at the time and recorded remotely. Assignments go to OpenProcessing, and he asks every student to add a note: what they meant to make, and where it failed.

The course began with a livestream. When he reached trigonometry, someone in the chat said maths was too hard and they might as well give up and stick to visuals. Before leaving to study abroad, Che-Yu Wu spent a full year recording it, from August 2017 to August 2018: vectors, trigonometry and polar coordinates, all the way to particle systems, games and Three.js. Each of its sixty-plus examples was designed visually before it was coded, and the slides ran past four hundred. Most of the recording happened at night and went on until morning, around a day job and client deadlines.

It's a two-hour example, but it took me nearly two weeks to finish.

The first course grew out of Che-Yu Wu's own frustration while learning web development: online tutorials explained features, and nobody explained how to finish a web page that looks good. He started from layout and colour and carried it through animation, responsive design and Vue.js. The first outline had thirteen lessons. Once he started recording he saw it was heading the wrong way, threw it out, and replanned it as more than ninety. Units meant to run five to ten minutes often stretched to twenty minutes or an hour, so the whole line of thinking and the design context could come through. The published version has 88 units and 29 hours of video.

How a course gets made

Every line here has a source: the essays he wrote about the courses at the time, his teaching-assistant log, the course website and Hahow’s public data.

  1. 2016

    Starting over

    The first course's outline had thirteen lessons. Once recording began he saw it was wrong, threw it out and replanned it as more than ninety. The published version has 88 units and 29 hours.

  2. 2017–2018

    A whole year

    The second course took a full year: 3,085 minutes, sixty-plus examples and more than four hundred slides, mostly recorded at night until morning.

  3. 2018–2019

    Teaching assistant in New York

    Across two semesters in NYU's Integrated Digital Media programme, he held 196 one-to-one sessions, about 122 hours with around 50 students, and set up his own booking, session log and weekly report.

  4. 2019–2020

    Ask first, then record

    Before recording the third course he collected 237 survey responses, then had 28 students trial it one unit a week for five weeks.

  5. 2016–2023

    Answering questions

    In the discussion boards of the three recorded courses he has answered 342 questions himself. From 2019 he added a teaching-assistant system for Q&A, office hours and grading, with weekly reports.

  6. 2026

    Turning the course into a website

    After every Panorama lesson he turns the stream into notes, chapter times and interactive teaching tools on the course website. The first four lessons add up to 41 interactive tools, 83 answered questions and 92 student works. Preparing lesson 4, on sound and image, he took his own open-source audiovisual library, oav-p5, from version 0.2 to 0.7.

So when recording the course, I always spent a huge amount of time endlessly smoothing out the content, re-recording again and again, and constantly revising the slides.
