Unfinished Bloom

CHEYUWU has long studied plant morphology and generative brush systems, from noise textures to watercolor and oil paint. Yet much like the moment photography was invented, he found that the more accurately the system painted a flower, the more its essence slipped away.

He returned to Van Gogh and the Impressionists, where he recognized a familiar rhythm: the flowers come apart, brushstrokes remain brushstrokes, and yet at times they gather back into something more abstract and somehow more whole. Between coherence and dispersion, life appears. It is the process of the inorganic reaching toward the organic. But the closer he came, the more clearly he saw that nature's perfect detail could never quite be touched.

So he let go of the obsession with arrival, and made the approach itself the work. Unfinished Bloom is the meeting ground of two living systems in conversation. The flower grows in her own way, blooming, unfolding, and withering within her own life. The system grows in its own way, reproducing, simulating, and approximating within the logic of its algorithm. The work itself does not reside on either side. It lives in the seam where these two kinds of growth cross paths, miss each other, and keep reaching across. This is what "unfinished" means.

Not a flaw, but a design. Not yet to be completed, but never meant to be.
