What they had in mind was collages of illustrations, which looked like flyers; I proposed painting the burgers with mathematics, with the feel of a brush. Every ingredient is a brush of its own: bacon curls the way bacon does, the bun is thick and dotted with sesame, and each stroke starts with a random momentum and rotation, so no two burgers are alike; then, following the whole menu, fries, onion rings, chicken rings, shakes and sodas are added, and a physics simulation stacks them into a meal. The burgers also sing: each stroke is a note from a chord, each burger a track, and the kick, snare and hi-hat are synthesised live in the Web Audio API without a single sample, a lo-fi beat of its own for every edition. White Castle kept telling me the burger did not look like theirs, and I kept reshaping it. It was torn apart. People who knew my earlier work saw burgers at the end and found it far too commercial, Andy Warhol’s soup cans. I still think it was ahead of its time technically: the whole work lives on chain, it was the first brand partnership built on Art Blocks’ generative minting technology, and on 17 December 2021, the day of the public sale, one thousand and forty-five editions were minted. I do not mind whether it is famous; what I mind is whether every piece of work tries something new. is the count of that trait among the 1,285; the pictures are the official renders of the day. ### Taking a burger apart into brushes The proposal of 9 November 2021 says it plainly: take the burger apart into layers and materials, and give each layer a brush with its own physical character. The first simulation was a test of how the brush would look, and it came out too close to another burger chain’s, so we called an emergency meeting and changed it. Only after the layout was designed did the algorithm in the middle get built, and that part runs on experience: how to make p5.js feel organic and soft rather than hard and geometric. The whole pipeline grew out of the Electriz project on Art Blocks, the same pinned randomness and the same chunking tools, except that this script runs to eighteen chunks and 134 KB, with the White Castle logo and the birthday fireworks written on chain too. One hash decides one meal: the Classic or the Vibrant brand palette, ten backgrounds (solid, stripe, grid, comic halftone, dot, wave, two brushes, the castle in twenty-three editions, the birthday in thirteen), one to a hundred sliders, a side, a drink, and four easter eggs: pixel, dot, nine editions hiding a Sea Ham robot, and fourteen whose fries grow Pochi faces. ### Burgers that sing The sound is generated entirely from data, without a single sample. The reference at proposal time was Brian Eno’s Music for Airports: each stroke is a note from a chord, each burger a track in the score. The on-chain build carries eight melody sets and three middle sections, four drum patterns, two snare and two hi-hat patterns, a beat length drawn between 0.15 and 0.3 seconds, and a reverb computed offline. A click on a burger triggers a beat, dragging gives it velocity, and the space bar sends every burger flying at once. Making Soul Fish in August 2022 I said: choose a scale, reorder it, leave gaps, and it becomes a repeating melody, much as the burgers had done; Sliderverse and SoulSea were both attempts to synthesise sound in the Web Audio API.
