Lost in the dawn before the storm, I found that some things in life were quietly changing direction; perhaps we are living more transparently, more truthfully. In a life we always meet a few beautiful people and things, and even when no thread of fate ties us together and they vanish into the flood of time, they live on forever in the wide fields of our dreams, becoming a romantic impressionism of existence. Against the universe a life passes so quickly; the coloured-pencil flowers that wake and grow from the seed of a generative algorithm, with simulated particles and digital computation, draw on the manner of the Impressionists to portray the souls that memory has beautified and evolved, and to make an eternal life, a flower of the soul. After releasing this series I was filled with feelings too tangled to describe; perhaps a fragment of a soul really did come to life and will exist forever, blossoming at last into a field of flowers. What is wrong with living wilfully? Forget everything; on the island of flowers it is best to be a happy caterpillar. ### Where the flowers come from The series began in the autumn of 2023 with a memory I could not put down and wanted to keep forever in the digital world. Flowers are a subject I have always drawn: among the daily sketches of November 2022 is Color Pencil Study — Country Field, a field laid down in coloured-pencil strokes and particles; a year later the wall label in Miami still carried that working title, Color Pencil Study. AI had just arrived that year. I did not want it to paint for me, since what it painted would no longer be mine, so I gave it another place. In the later Eternal Dream Edition a visitor speaks into a microphone about the story they cannot forget, the AI translates the feeling into colour, and the field of flowers still grows from the algorithm I wrote; the AI handles the emotional computation a machine finds hard, and I handle what I do best, algorithmic impressionism. ### How the flowers grow Each edition is decided by its hash on chain: a theme first, nine names over eight coloured-pencil palettes, then a seed, and the seed feeds the noise and the random numbers. The canvas is split recursively in two, and in two again, until every cell is filled with particle strokes of coloured pencil whose hue wavers within fifty degrees of the background; fifteen stalks of grass grow first, then some twenty flowers open one by one, each laid down in order as ten stems of particles, leaves and petals, the far ones painted before the near. Every stroke accumulates on a canvas that is never cleared; after two thousand frames the picture has formed, and a shader lays light and paper grain over it. The image is a 1200 × 1200 square, the same hash always grows the same field, and only the drift of the light differs slightly with real time. The Soul of Flowers was one of the four, its wall label still carrying the working title Color Pencil Study, the counter in the corner of the screen climbing all day. Among the two hundred editions Harvest is the most common at twenty-eight and Zenith the rarest at nineteen. Click to enlarge. ## The Eternal Dream Edition In September 2024, in a warehouse of the Zhongyuan Cultural and Creative Park, at the TAxT Taoyuan Tech-Art Festival, The Soul of Flowers became for the first time a room one could walk into: Light Matrix’s three walls in a horseshoe plus the floor, and with 3D glasses on, the coloured-pencil flowers grow out of the screens and into the space. Flowers, grass and background are split into three layers, generated live on site in TouchDesigner and sent to the walls over NDI, with dried flowers by Yong Garden in the foreground. On the other side of the room stands a microphone. Speak into it about the person or the thing you cannot forget: the voice is transcribed into text, a language model reads its feeling and chooses eight colours and a name, and that set of colours is sent into the algorithm to grow a flower that belongs only to the one who spoke. It starts muted as it enters the viewport; press Sound on at the top right to listen. ## Afterwards In June 2024 the series took part, as edition captures, in The Digital Art Mile in Basel; on 29 June the Sacred Forest concert by PTS and NHK at Liberty Square put the flowers on the stage screen beside the orchestra; from August to November a film version travelled with the dialog() Asian generative art exhibition through Tokyo, Taipei and Seoul.
