A “mad scientist” roams the city, collecting forbidden emotions and dangerous ideas, bringing them back to an underground laboratory for endless experimentation attempting to cultivate bizarre creatures and construct threshold experiments that hover between beauty and loss of control. Using code as its medium, the work transforms mathematics, physics, and noise into organic waves, particle trajectories, geometric structures, and life-like, self-evolving systems. A single algorithm can generate countless variations; no two executions are ever the same. The performance also represents a breakthrough in medium and technology: by leveraging more universal web technologies and p5.js, it challenges the integration of real-time audiovisual performance within large-scale spaces. The audience is invited to step into a small world that breathes, morphs, and leaves traces searching for order within chaos, and discovering emotion within rationality. Loneliness, excitement, anxiety, confusion each emotion was dismantled into particles, lines, and blocks of color, becoming page after page of silent diaries. Continuing his practice in New York, he created relentlessly, releasing one piece every day, finding joy in nocturnal cycles of code and computation. Then one day, his work Strange Robot was stolen and listed for sale on an online platform. The incident unexpectedly triggered an investigation, prompting people to look back through the long accumulation of his works—only to realize that the “original” had already been growing quietly in the shadows. The theft became a kind of rupture, letting light pour in. It also gave him renewed energy to gather scattered creations, unfinished ideas, and forbidden emotions, and move them all into an underground space called Chaos Laboratory. There, he invites audiences to step inside and witness not just a visual spectacle, but the traces of CHE YU WU repeatedly pushing toward his limits and again and again attempting to break beyond himself. Artist statement ## Original artist text 2022 · The first two paragraphs of the 2022 text are kept; the NFT explainer of the time stays in the source file and is not republished as present-day guidance. "Chaos Laboratory" marks the first physical solo exhibition by Che-Yu Wu, one of Taiwan's NFT art pioneers. The exhibition showcases 50 selected generative algorithmic works from his NFT art creations between 2020-2022. Drawing inspiration from nature, physics, modern art, mathematical rhythms, and music, the works combine classical and modern electronic compositions where live performances and musical segments directly influence the programmed visuals. The exhibition transforms online interactive NFT virtual works into an immersive experience, presented in Taiwan's first five-sided immersive space "AMBI SPACE ONE," leading audiences into the mysterious world of NFTs while exploring the infinite possibilities of interactive algorithms and programmatic art creation.
